The Tuandao-Xuejiadao (Qingdao-Huangdao) tunnel officially opened on June 30, 2011. People can now travel quickly between Qingdao and Huangdao Kaifaqu 24 hours a day. Private car owners and taxi drivers using the tunnel must pay a 30 yuan toll. The tunnel can be traversed in less than 10 minutes at speeds around 60 kmh. Once entering the tunnel, cars are not allowed to change lanes.
The tunnel ends a decades old dilemma for those wishing to reliably and quickly get from Huangdao Kaifaqu (Xuejiadao) to Qingdao.
Previous options were the ferry or driving around the north side of Jiaozhou Bay, the former plagued by fog that stopped the boats and the latter fraught with perils of traffic accidents often caused by fog. Not to disparage the Qingdao fog, many residents enjoy the mist. Another plus to the tunnel is the 24 hour access on demand to both sides of the bay.
