Every May, people in Qingdao head out to Beizhai to pick and eat cherries. Beizhai is a Laoshan village area close to both the Ocean University of China’s Laoshan campus and the site of the 2014 International Horticultural Exposition in a fertile valley along Bin Hai Expressway. There are countless cherry trees around Beizhai, most of them cultivated by local farmers who offer the chance to enter their orchards to pick and eat as much as you can stomach for a set fee. Many local offices of Chinese companies arrange a group outing to Laoshan at the end of May to sample the fruit. Smaller groups are welcome and holiday makers are numerous.
